Turning CO₂ from an emission into a biological feedstock.

Photosynthetic organisms such as microalgae use carbon dioxide as a carbon source. Through photosynthesis, inorganic carbon becomes organic biomass — a bridge between carbon management and biological production.

Global energy-related CO₂ emissions reached 37.8 gigatonnes in 2024, with atmospheric CO₂ concentrations at approximately 422.5 parts per million that year, according to the International Energy Agency's Global Energy Review 2025. The scale of that challenge calls for approaches that can sit alongside emissions reduction and other forms of carbon management. Cyvora is investigating biological carbon utilisation as one of them.

Our carbon-utilisation technology is built around integrating suitable CO₂ sources with controlled algae cultivation systems. The process involves considerably more than exposing algae to exhaust gas. Effective carbon utilisation requires attention to:

  • CO₂ concentration
  • Gas composition
  • Gas transfer and mass-transfer efficiency
  • Cultivation conditions
  • pH response
  • Biomass productivity
  • Contaminants within the gas stream
  • Gas delivery and control
  • Downstream biomass recovery

The objective is a system that can take an appropriate industrial CO₂ stream and direct it into a controlled biological production process, where the carbon is incorporated into biomass that can then be harvested and developed into useful products.

Where it has reached

The Cyvora Carbon programme is at pilot stage, with algae cultivation being developed and tested using CO₂ as an input. Its current stage is listed, with every other programme, in the pipeline.

The longer-term objective is modular systems that can be integrated with suitable industrial facilities and adapted to different operating environments — carbon management and biological manufacturing as part of one production system.
